Vietnam-Japan Natural Alliance for Semiconductor Industry to Grow

21-02-2025

Hội thảo nghành bán dẫn Việt Nam - Nhật Bản

On February 19, 2025, in Hanoi, FPT Semiconductor, a subsidiary of FPT Corporation, together with the National Innovation Center (NIC) and the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, co-hosted the “Vietnam-Japan Semiconductor Cooperation Networking Program.” This seminar was part of the working agenda of the “Kyushu Semiconductor Workforce Development Consortium” delegation. The event marked a significant milestone in the practical collaboration between Vietnam and Japan for this strategic technology sector.

The program welcomed Mr. Ishikawa Isamu, Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, along with representatives from the Kyushu Semiconductor Workforce Development Consortium delegation visiting Vietnam. Kyushu, known as the “Silicon Island” of Japan, is a major hub for high-tech industries, particularly electronics and semiconductors. During its golden era, Kyushu’s semiconductor production played a crucial role in securing Japan’s position as the global leader in the industry, contributing to half of the world’s semiconductor market share. Today, the Japanese government is making a strong commitment to revitalizing its semiconductor industry, with Kyushu at the forefront of this effort. This includes attracting investments in 108 projects worth approximately USD 31 billion, including two multi-billion-dollar chip manufacturing plants by TSMC, the world’s leading chip producer.

The Kyushu semiconductor delegation to Vietnam included government representatives, major corporations, and leading academic institutions such as the Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, Tera Probe, Nisso, World Intec, Fukuoka Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), and the Kyushu Semiconductor and Digital Innovation Association (SIIQ). Their visit aimed to explore cooperation opportunities in the semiconductor sector, particularly in workforce development. During the event, representatives from Vietnam and Japan engaged in in-depth discussions on the development roadmap for the semiconductor industry, planned activities, and potential areas for collaboration between the two nations.

Mr. Nguyễn Vinh Quang, CEO of FPT Semiconductor, FTP Corporation emphasized the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan, stating that both countries are natural allies in the semiconductor industry. He also introduced two key alliances to solidify and enhance this collaboration:

  • Alliance #1: Education Alliance – Focused on fostering high-quality semiconductor talent in both countries. FPT Semiconductor is honored to support the Vietnamese government’s goal of training 50,000 high-quality semiconductor engineers by 2030. This includes launching initiatives such as:

    • Establishing Co-Innovation Spaces in Hanoi and Da Nang
    • Founding the Semiconductor Microelectronics Department at FPT University, which has already enrolled 1,000 students in its first year
  • Alliance #2: Manufacturing Supply Chain Alliance – Aimed at ensuring an uninterrupted semiconductor production supply chain while developing advanced technologies and gradually integrating deeper into the global semiconductor value chain for both Vietnam and Japan.

    • With support from the Kyushu government, a key stronghold of Japan’s semiconductor industry, this alliance is expected to drive Vietnam’s semiconductor sector forward.
    • The goal is to establish domestic chip packaging and testing capabilities in Vietnam, ushering in a new era of high-tech cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.

Japanese enterprises at the event expressed strong interest in continuing their support for Vietnam’s core industries, including semiconductors and innovation. This aligns with efforts to strengthen Vietnam-Japan cooperation in the coming years.

FPT Semiconductor is committed to working alongside Kyushu to maintain its role as Japan’s “Silicon Island” and help Vietnam integrate more deeply into the global semiconductor value chain.
