FPT Expert Proposes Initiative to Advance Semiconductor Technology Alongside Next-Generation Electronics Industry

17-01-2025

At the 6th Make in Vietnam Forum, Mr. Trần Phú Sơn, Business Development Director of FPT Semiconductor, along with leaders from the Ministry of Information and Communications and various enterprises, discussed and analyzed opportunities and proposed strategies to develop Vietnam’s semiconductor industry in tandem with the advanced electronics sector, aiming to elevate Vietnam in the new era.

The National Forum on the Development of Vietnam’s Digital Technology Enterprises, organized annually by the Ministry of Information and Communications, focuses on the 2024 theme: “Mastering Digital Technology, Driving Vietnam’s Digital Transformation with Vietnamese Digital Technology Enterprises.”

The forum was attended by representatives from domestic research and training organizations, IT associations, “Make in Vietnam” digital technology enterprises, digital technology experts, economic and trade organizations, foreign diplomatic missions, multinational tech corporations, and foreign investors in Vietnam.

Seminar on Semiconductor Industry Development

During the opening remarks at the seminar titled “Vietnam Semiconductor Industry C = SET + 1 – A Driver for National Development,” Mr. Nguyễn Khắc Lịch, Director of the Department of Information and Communication Technology Industry under the Ministry of Information and Communications, emphasized:

“Resolution 57 of the Politburo has set the goal of achieving technological self-reliance and competitiveness, especially in strategic technologies. Therefore, Vietnam must master these strategic technologies to lead its digital transformation. Only then can Vietnam achieve sustainable development.”

Semiconductor technology, in particular, is considered a key technology for Vietnam in this new era. Mr. Lịch outlined the strategy for developing Vietnam’s semiconductor industry through 2030, with a vision for 2050, based on the formula:
C = SET + 1, where:

  • C: Chip (Semiconductor Chips)
  • S: Specialized (Specialized Chips)
  • E: Electronics (Electronics Industry)
  • T: Talent (Skilled Workforce)
  • +1: Vietnam (Positioning Vietnam as a safe, new global hub for the semiconductor supply chain).

The strategy focuses on the development of specialized chips as a viable pathway for latecomer nations like Vietnam. These chips are widely applicable in electronic devices and offer cost-effective implementation, laying the foundation for next-generation electronics industries that integrate specialized chips and AI technologies.

Vietnam’s Competitive Edge

Analyzing Vietnam’s advantages in linking the semiconductor industry’s development with the electronics sector, Mr. Trần Phú Sơn stated:

“According to the General Statistics Office, the electronics industry is a pivotal manufacturing sector in the economy, with significant ripple effects across other industries. Electronics exports reached $132 billion in 2024 and are projected to rise to $160 billion by 2025. This demonstrates significant potential for producing electronic and smart devices.

At the same time, Vietnam’s IT industry boasts a robust ecosystem in terms of talent and technology, facilitating the integration of hardware and software to support advanced technological solutions.”

To accompany and promote the development of the semiconductor wave alongside the next-generation electronics industry, Mr. Son proposed four approaches.

First, FPT will continue to focus on outsourcing services for semiconductor design and manufacturing, leveraging its extensive international customer network to provide chip design outsourcing services.

Second, chip design and production will be aligned with customers’ actual needs, with the current emphasis on power chip lines.

Third, the company will prioritize training and developing semiconductor human resources.

Finally, FPT aims to accelerate R&D for next-generation electronic devices, such as integrating AI with semiconductors and developing IoT devices and AI on edge systems based on semiconductor platforms.

“In the context of the nation entering an era of significant growth, FPT is committed to partnering with the government and businesses to foster innovation, drive technological breakthroughs, and enhance self-reliance, confidence, resilience, and national pride, bringing Vietnamese intelligence to the global stage,” affirmed Mr. Tran Phu Son.

Currently, in the semiconductor chip sector, FPT is the first Vietnamese company to design commercialized chips, with orders for 70 million chips from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (China), and partnerships with numerous organizations and companies worldwide.
