On the afternoon of December 10 in Tokyo, Japan, FPT Semiconductor, under FPT Corporation, officially signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Toshiba Information Systems (TJ) for the next 10 years. This marks a significant milestone in addressing the semiconductor workforce shortage in Japan.
Collaboration to Address Semiconductor Workforce Shortage
Building on a decade of collaboration in semiconductor workforce provision, FPT will continue to send additional engineers to Japan under the new Memorandum of Understanding. Over the next five years, the number of engineers will increase nearly sixfold compared to the current figure.
The key goal of the MOU between FPT and Toshiba Information Systems is to develop a high-quality workforce, create opportunities for Vietnamese engineers, and deepen bilateral collaboration in advanced technology sectors.
This cooperation not only focuses on workforce development but also expands into new fields such as IC testing, reliability checks, fault analysis, and IC production to meet the growing demands of the rapidly advancing semiconductor industry.
Additionally, educational collaboration is a top priority. Both parties will work with FPT’s education divisions to design and develop specialized training programs. Graduates of these programs will be prioritized for career opportunities at TJ.
Annually, both sides will organize workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions with participation from experts at FPT and TJ to facilitate training and technical discussions. The involvement of engineers and experts from both sides will not only enhance professional skills but also foster innovation and creativity in the semiconductor sector.
Offshore development is also a critical component of the expansion strategy. Toshiba will manage and operate an Offshore Development Center (ODC) in Vietnam at FPT’s facilities. This initiative presents a major opportunity to elevate Vietnam’s presence in the global semiconductor market.
Enhancing Vietnam’s Position in the Global Semiconductor Industry
The semiconductor industry is currently considered the “lifeblood” of the digital economy, playing a vital role in fields such as automotive manufacturing, medical devices, consumer electronics, and AI technology. However, the rapid growth of the industry has led Japan to face a significant shortage of semiconductor talent.
In this context, Vietnam, with its strategy of developing a high-quality workforce, has emerged as a reliable provider of semiconductor talent for global technology corporations. Notably, FPT has solidified its role through its strategic partnership with Toshiba Information Systems.
Since the beginning of their collaboration in 2014, FPT and Toshiba Information Systems have successfully built a team of high-quality semiconductor engineers who have been trained and contributed to strategic projects in Japan.
This partnership has also facilitated the transfer of knowledge and technology between Japanese and Vietnamese experts. This has established a solid foundation for the development of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry while positioning Vietnam as a reputable regional semiconductor talent hub.
At the signing ceremony, Mr. Trần Đăng Hòa, Chairman of FPT IS and Chairman of FPT Semiconductor under FPT Corporation, emphasized that this cooperation not only recognizes the successful 10-year partnership between FPT and Toshiba Information Systems but also opens up vast opportunities for Vietnam to assert its position in the global semiconductor value chain.
Mr. Trần Đăng Hòa further stated that this collaboration not only helps address the semiconductor workforce shortage in Japan but also lays a solid foundation for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry to rise significantly in the coming years.
Representatives from Toshiba Information Systems highly appreciated the capabilities of FPT’s engineers, who have played crucial roles in Toshiba’s strategic projects over the past decade. Toshiba leadership expressed optimism about the expanded cooperation with FPT to build a high-quality semiconductor engineering workforce while broadening activities into new areas such as IC testing, fault analysis, reliability verification, IC production, and specialized training. This is regarded as a pivotal step in enhancing the position of both partners within the global semiconductor industry.
The 10-year partnership celebration and MOU signing ceremony between FPT and Toshiba Information Systems not only mark a decade of successful collaboration but also unlock new opportunities for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry. This serves as clear evidence of Vietnam’s potential and capability in the global semiconductor sector.
